Bournemouth Coastal BID

Commissioned by Bournemouth Coastal BID, and in partnership with the Bournemouth Towns Fund, we created the UK’s first permanently installed outdoor 3D projection mapping show. Located on Boscombe High Street, opposite the Sovereign Shopping Centre, this installation was designed to enhance the town’s appeal during off-peak seasons and encourage both locals and visitors to explore the coastal strip.

Firstly, we needed to develop a captivating, year-round attraction that would draw people to the area after dark. We also needed to ensure the installation was durable against the UK’s unpredictable weather and offer content that could be regularly updated to maintain public interest.

We designed and delivered an 18m x 11m projection mapping display, utilising a digital projection M-Vision 23000-WU DLP projector installed in a secure upstairs location to withstand environmental conditions. The system includes a Show Control computer and media player with remote access capabilities, ensuring seamless operation.

Eight outdoor speakers were used to surround the projection area, providing an immersive multisensory experience. The inaugural show, themed ‘Love Boscombe’ for Valentine’s Day, featured dynamic 3D visuals such as floating hearts, local seafront imagery, and animated artwork from local residents. The content is designed to be updated regularly, with plans for different shows throughout the year and the ability to stream live sports, creating a multifunctional space that encourages repeat visits.

The installation has successfully transformed Boscombe High Street into a vibrant evening destination, attracting both residents and tourists. By offering a dynamic and evolving visual experience, the project has contributed to increased footfall, extended dwell time, and a renewed sense of community pride. The ability to update content ensures the attraction remains fresh and engaging, supporting Bournemouth Coastal BID’s mission to revitalise the town and promote local culture.
