Bude Tunnel Pixel Mapping

The project

LCI brought a huge dose of Christmas magic to one of Britain’s unlikeliest tourist attractions –  a long plastic tunnel in a Sainsbury’s car park in Cornwall.

The challenge

The Bude Tunnel had gained local fame when it appeared on TripAdvisor as a quirky place to visit. Sainsbury’s wanted to transform it into a festive attraction that would delight locals and create national attention. The challenge was to take a simple, long plastic tunnel and turn it into a magical, shareable experience.

The solution

Working with Theme Traders and the marketing agency Gravity Road, LCI installed 30,000 lights and pixel-mapped them to create stunning animated effects throughout the tunnel. Every light, pattern, and sequence was carefully designed to delight visitors, turning the tunnel into an immersive festive spectacle.

The impact

The project quickly went viral, making Bude Tunnel the top trending attraction in the UK over winter 2018. Highlights included:

  • National media coverage across BBC, ITV, and all major UK newspapers
  • Feature on the comedy show ‘Have I Got News For You’
  • A local couple’s engagement in the tunnel, demonstrating its memorable and emotional impact

The project showcased how a small space could be transformed into a must-visit festive experience through creative lighting and pixel mapping, capturing the imagination of visitors and media alike..
