Water Screen Projection
The project
As part of the UK’s largest light art biennial, Lumiere 2023, LCI Productions partnered with French artist Joanie Lemercier to deliver Constellations – a breathtaking water screen projection exploring the story of the universe through light, water, and sound. Set against the scenic backdrop of the River Wear in Durham, the immersive artwork captivated audiences at this prestigious four-day event.
The challenge
With over 170,000 visitors expected and world-class artists like Ai Weiwei and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer also on the lineup, Constellations had to deliver visual and technical impact. The real twist? Finding a long, flat stretch of water with ideal sightlines and space for a dual-pump floating water screen, all in a medieval city.
The solution
To meet the artistic vision and the environmental constraints, we delivered a sleek, high-impact water-based AV system:
2 x Panasonic PT-RZ21 Projectors for stunning large-format image delivery.
A MadMapper media server to handle content playback and creative control.

Waterscreen:
A dual 55kW floating water screen system, installed across from the Durham racecourse for optimal viewing and minimal riverbed disruption.
Environmental Considerations:
We worked closely with the Environment Agency to secure permits and complied with all safety protocols.
We also coordinated local logistics independently, collaborating with regional contacts to ensure swift install and de-rig with minimal impact.
The impact
As one of 40 featured installations in Lumiere 2023, Constellations became a highlight of the festival, drawing large crowds and glowing feedback. The natural setting, technical precision, and artistic storytelling came together in perfect harmony, proving once again that we know how to put on a show… even when the stage is floating.
