Durham Constellations
Water Screen Projections

LCI Productions had the privilege of being part of the 8th edition of Lumiere, the UK’s light art biennial, produced by Artichoke.

From November 16th to 19th 2023, the picturesque medieval city of Durham was transformed into a mesmerising nocturnal art experience, showcasing 40 artworks by artists from 15 different countries. Including such world-renowned artists Ai Weiwei and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, the 2023 event attracted over 170,000 visitors.

Each Lumiere, artists create a light artwork that reimagines familiar buildings and public spaces, changing the way we experience our urban surroundings. In 2023, the entire city served as a canvas, with light installations adorning streets, bridges, buildings, and the river, extending from the Market Place to the historic Bishop Auckland town centre, Durham University campus, and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Durham Cathedral.

This year, LCI Productions worked with French artist Joanne Lemercier to deliver her ‘Constellations’ art piece. ‘Constellations’ depicts an audio-visual interpretation of the story of the universe, drawing upon the elements of the environment that it created, namely water, light and wind. This massive and spectacular piece lit a mass of the River Wear, interplaying with its environment giving the piece a natural context.

To deliver the installation, LCI used a dual pump 55kW floating water screen, 2 x Panasonic PT-RZ21 Projectors and mad mapper media server to programme the artwork.

The only challenge LCI had was finding a long enough stretch of relatively flat water with a good viewing area and excellent sightlines to install the water pumps. The team decided to set it up across from the racecourse which gave visitors excellent views.

Ornella Salloum, Producer, Lumiere 2023:

“LCI were really helpful in the lead up to the event, particularly in providing information for our Environment Agency permits. They were able to work independently, reaching out to local contacts to find the support they needed, and provided all the equipment for the water screen. Installation and de-rig were swift and smooth, and in compliance with safety measures”.
