Sela Geordie Day Celebrations

Water Screen Projections

The project

We teamed up with Sela and Newcastle United to make a splash on Geordie Day with a spectacular water, projection and light show, which used iconic city landmarks as its canvas at the Quayside in Gateshead.

To promote the event management company’s first year of its corporate sponsorship with Newcastle United, this nighttime show needed to commemorate the city’s rich heritage, its football stars past and present and the fans’ love of football.

To make this happen – we joined forces with teams from GMC Events, Creative Technology (CT) and Aim Design to deliver a multimedia extravaganza.

The challenge

When it came to installation the team had to work against a huge  tidal range on the Tyne (5m) and very strong winds, so anchoring and aligning the projection was very challenging. Luckily the team developed a successful solution, which allowed the show to go ahead without any problems.  We definitely needed a ‘bigger boat’, bigger anchors and large marine marker buoys.

The solution

We curated a breathtaking water screen projection segment, showcasing beautiful 3D light projections. We enhanced the display by optimising the content specifically for the water screen medium and utilised two Panasonic projectors with a Disguise Media Server to project the visuals onto the three 40-metre water screens.

AIM expertly produced the show design and content, while CT provided projection mapping and audio solutions, complimented by dazzling light shows and immersive audio-scapes.

The ten-minute multimedia performance was a highlight reel of Newcastle United’s legacy, underpinned with Geordie phrases and local emblems of North East culture. Tributes were paid to Sir Bobby Robson, Newcastle legends, The Blaydon Races, Newcastle United Women’s team and Eddie Howe’s current squad.

The impact

The show achieved rave reviews and significant social media buzz, resulting in a huge crowd turnout and enthusiastic reception.
