Woolf Works, New York 2024

Laser SFX

The project

Commissioned by the Royal Opera House, we provided choreographed laser effects for the American Ballet Theatre’s performance of Woolf Works, performing at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. This ballet, inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf, was part of a global tour that began in the UK and continued to the United States.

The challenge

The production required seamless integration of laser effects to sync with the live dance performances. This demanded precise synchronization and innovative design to enhance the storytelling without overshadowing the dancers.

The solution

We supplied a dynamic light and laser show using two EX 15 lasers, synchronized to alternating wavelengths of 532nm, 632nm, and 460nm at 2.5mm beam diameter. The laser effects were controlled via a Pangolin Beyond 5.5.5 controller, with some sequences cued over Artnet from the lighting desk at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Working closely with lighting designer, Lucy Carter and associate lighting designer, Simon Bennison, the team produced a captivating laser and light show using two EOS TI lighting desks to bring everything together for the performance.

The impact

The integration of rainbow beams of light intertwined with lasers, added a dramatic effect to the show. The performance was met with critical acclaim, including recognition from The Guardian as a “hi-tech, time-bending fantasy.”
